![]() Cinderella penguin had to do all of the dirty work around the house such as cleaning, sweeping, laundry and cooking. Cinderella lost her mother and he father married an evil step mother penguin and got two step sister penguins. The only difference is that the characters are not humans but beautiful penguins. ![]() ![]() The penguins' expressions are kind of goofy and the book tells the story fairly well, but it's not something I'd particularly want to read again.Ĭinderella penguin is written in the same format of the Cinderella we all know and love. Maybe this was original when it was first published in 1992, but there have been so many fairy tale retellings in recent years that I suspect there are probably some better ones out there. The only thing that's a little different is that when the Prince's footmen come looking for Cinderella, her family shoves her in the cellar and her foot gets caught sticking out of the cellar door when the stepsisters fight over the glass flipper and drop it, it lands squarely on her foot, fitting perfectly. This is just "Cinderella" but with penguins in all the roles. This book just didn't get there for me, as it's a basic retelling with very few changes from the original and the illustrations are nothing special. ![]() ![]() Either that, or the illustrations need to be spectacular. At this point, if you're going to retell a fairy tale, you need to be able to bring something new or different to it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Specifically, I would like to talk about the ending epiphany of protagonist Meursault, and what it is that allows Meursault to face his death happily at the end of The Stranger. The nature of this article is such that it requires spoiling basic plot details of The Stranger, so you should only continue reading after this paragraph if you either do not mind spoilers or have already read the book. This week, I would like to look at this same theme, authenticity, in the context of a work that is not merely labeled existential, but existential ist, appearing as it does among the canon of the French existentialists in the 20th century: The Stranger by Albert Camus. Introduction:Ī month ago, your Tuesday Tome article consisted of a discussion of the topic of authenticity in the existential classic The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy. ![]() ![]() Eventually, however, he grows preoccupied by a fear of discovery. I knew, too, that his apartment was narrow and ill-ventilated.” The ruse works, and the victim is declared dead by an act of God.įor many years, the narrator enjoys his inheritance and the life it affords. ![]() He finally hits upon the notion of using a poisoned candle in the victim’s room, since “I knew my victim’s habit of reading in bed. The narrator goes on to reveal that he plotted murder “for many weeks and months” in order to gain a large inheritance from his victim. The narrator also blames the Imp for his current circumstances: he is in a prison cell, condemned to be executed for murder. The narrator refers to this impulse as “ the Imp of the Perverse.” The sensation of standing at the edge of a cliff and feeling the need to jump, for instance, comes from the Imp. Some such impulses, the narrator maintains, are actively harmful-they drive a person to “perversely” do what they know they shouldn’t do. Phrenology assumes human impulses to be beneficial and sent by God (the periodic need to eat, for instance), but the narrator insists that darker impulses exist that can even override the need for self-preservation. He denounces various methods of evaluating human psychology, such as phrenology, because they do not adequately deal with the concept of a certain impulse. ![]() The “Imp of the Perverse” begins with a meditation on the narrator’s peculiar philosophy. ![]() ![]() ![]() You likely know Margaret Atwood’s work most recently by the adaptation of her novel The Handmaid’s Taleinto television, but this short poem has always stuck with me as one of the strongest, most visceral interpretations of toxic love though it is not one of the most famous heartbreak poems. One of my favorite poems by him, “Bluebird,” talks about the inability to express emotion.Īnother poem by Charles Bukowski is one of his poems about heartbreak and moving on: People who know Bukowski’s work do not generally think of him as a poet who writes poems about love, but his book’s title Love is a Dog from Hell suggests otherwise. Love is a dog from hellAnd I made a mistake by Charles Bukowski Like, “We promised to stop calling this late at night.” “Let her discover me / with an inopportune phone call.” My personal favorite begins with seeing through a misdirection: “Even though you aren’t wearing it, / I can tell you’re married.” Prince’s collection is a much-needed book for anyone wanting to read about heartbreak. These poems about heartbreak and betrayal display as found poems, epigraphs set their stage: “Found on a hotel notepad / stuffed in a suitcase,” “Found on the kitchen counter / beside a half-empty mug of coffee.” And their opening lines are equally as rending. This entire collection deals with heartbreaks and its many forms, and it should definitely be read in its entirety.
